Antifungal drugs with clotrimazole are one of the most popular on the pharmacological market. This is due to the wide spectrum of action and high effectiveness of this substance against skin mycoses. Most often, doctors prescribe patients Clotrimazole – an antimycotic, named after the active component in its composition. It costs less than other brands with similar properties and does not contain unnecessary ingredients. However, before using it, you should carefully study the instructions.
Clotrimazole is a synthetic antifungal agent. Preparations based on it are intended exclusively for local use, are effective against parasitic fungi that cause diseases of the skin, nails, hair, and mucous membranes.
Scientists have proven the activity of clotrimazole against:
- yeast and yeast-like fungi;
- mold pathogens;
- some gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria.
Such properties allow you to treat many diseases with clotrimazole:
- various mycoses of smooth skin, upper and lower extremities (dermatophytic, candidal, etc.);
- pityriasis and ringworm;
- otomycosis (fungal lesions of the external auditory canal);
- infectious diseases of the genital organs in men and women (candidal vulvovaginitis, balanoposthitis, trichomoniasis, gardnerellosis, etc.);
- candidal stomatitis;
- onychomycosis as part of complex therapy;
- pyoderma (purulent skin lesion);
- pseudomycosis (erythrasma).
Due to the wide spectrum of action, this drug is conveniently used in case of detection of mixed infections:
- caused by pathogens from different groups;
- fungal and bacterial.
Clotrimazole slows down the oxidative processes in cells, due to which the concentration of hydrogen peroxide in them rises sharply. This leads to intoxication and rapid death of fungi, stopping their division and growth. At the same time, the active component disrupts the synthesis of the main component of the membranes of pathogens – ergosterol. As a result, their structure and permeability changes, which ends with cell lysis.
The drug protects well from infection, therefore, it is used for prophylactic purposes in preparation for childbirth and surgical operations.
All drugs with clotrimazole are used externally, the active substance is practically not found in the blood. In therapeutic concentrations, it accumulates only in keratin and all layers of the epidermis.
Dosage Forms of Clotrimazole
The form of the medical device is selected depending on the location of the infection and the exact diagnosis. Today, the pharmaceutical industry produces the following types of medicines with the same name:
- vaginal cream;
- local ointment;
- cream for external use;
- solutions (drops, sprays);
- vaginal tablets and suppositories for the treatment of thrush in women.
For the treatment of skin and nail mycoses, a cream, ointment and liquid with a concentration of the active substance of 10 mg per 1 g are used.
The basis of the cream is fatty alcohols and water. It is a light emulsion of white color. It is quickly absorbed into the skin, does not stick, does not stain clothes.
The ointment is made on the basis of polymers of ethylene glycol and polyethylene glycol. It is thicker, creates a protective layer on the skin than prolongs the effect of the drug.
The solution contains 96% ethyl alcohol and water. It is an oily liquid with a faint odor. Due to the alcohol content, it is not recommended for use by children under 2 years old, pregnant and lactating women. May dry skin.
Contraindications and warnings
Preparations from the Clotrimazole series are used topically, because of which their systemic effect is minimal. Therefore, there are very few contraindications to their use – hypersensitivity to the active component or related substances that make up the drug.
In the first three months of pregnancy, vaginal forms are prohibited, and external ones are allowed for use as directed by a doctor. In the second and third trimester, you can use the drug in any form (after medical consultation).
When feeding breast milk, Clotrimazole is used very carefully – so that it can not get on the skin and mucous membranes of the baby. For example, cream (ointment) can not be applied to the armpits, hands, mammary glands.
Avoid contact with the product inside and on the mucous membrane of the eyes. If this happens, seek medical attention. If you accidentally swallow the composition, you need to rinse the stomach and take activated charcoal at the rate of 1 tablet per 10 kg of body weight. Eyes washed with plenty of warm water.
According to the instructions, the drug has no age restrictions. It is allowed to use it from the moment of birth, but only according to strict indications and under the supervision of a doctor.
When applying Clotrimazole to the skin and mucous membranes, local negative phenomena may occur:
- redness, irritation;
- the appearance of blisters;
- rash, peeling;
- burning and tingling sensation.
From the mucous membranes – inflammation, swelling, itching, increased volume of secretions.
The manifestation of such symptoms requires discontinuation of the drug and consultation with a doctor.
Instructions for use of clotrimazole
Cream or ointment from the fungus is applied to clean, dry skin 1-4 times in knocking. The duration of the course of therapy depends on the type of pathogen and the degree of damage. For example, dermatomycosis of the feet, hands and other parts of the body should be treated for about 4 weeks. Pityriasis versicolor passes in 10-20 days.
Symptoms disappear within three days from the start of clotrimazole. If the manifestations of mycosis do not go away, it is worth clarifying the diagnosis and identifying the sensitivity of the pathogen to the drug.
Clotrimazole in liquid form best helps against nail fungus. It is dripped twice a day onto the nail plates pre-steamed, trimmed and cleaned of crumbling particles. For each, 2-3 drops are consumed.
Toenail fungus requires long-term treatment – at least three months. During this time, a healthy nail will grow back and infection spores will die. In advanced cases, to get rid of mycosis, it is necessary to connect oral antifungal drugs, combining them with a solution.
Spray is used in the same way as ointment and cream. At the same time, it dries the epidermis, removes excessive sweating. Therefore, it is recommended to use it for processing places of accumulation of sweat glands:
- legs, areas between the toes;
- axillary hollows, groin;
- area under the mammary glands in women.
In addition, shoes, clothes that were in contact with infected skin are sprayed with a spray.
In pharmacies, you can find analog preparations of Clotrimazole from different brands:
- Candide (Glenmark Pharmaceuticals, India). The cost of a cream is about 250 rubles, a solution (drops) – 300, a powder – 350;
- Clotrimazole-Acry ointment (Akrikhin, Russia) – 95 rubles;
- Clotrimazole cream (Ozone Russia LLC) – 55 rubles;
- Mikosprey skin and nail lotion (Bios Fitosila, Russia) – 100 rubles;
- Clotrimazole cream (GlaxoSmithKline, Poland) – 180 rubles;
- Akriderm GK (Akrikhin, Russia). Three-component ointment with betamethasone, gentamicin, clotrimazole – 400 rubles.
Prices vary depending on the manufacturer – European goods are traditionally more expensive than Russian counterparts. However, doctors have no complaints about the quality of the latter, so they often prescribe affordable drugs to their patients.
Personal patient reviews on the treatment of the fungus with clotrimazole
Olga, 20 years old.
I always thought that brown spots on the neck and chest are pigmentation. I have been with them for many years. Spots became more if you sunbathe in the sun. I was a little embarrassed about them, covered them with a scarf and thought that this could not be cured. But once a dermatologist (I came to her for a completely different reason) told me that this was versicolor.
It is called a fungus. She advised to be treated with Clortortimazole or Candide cream. And after a week the spots almost disappeared! It was so easy to get rid of the eternal problem. Itself would never have guessed that the fungus is manifested in this way.
Vasilisa, 35 years old.
Clotrimazole is a proven and cheap remedy for foot fungus. At different times, it was used by my husband, father, mother and myself. Cream is always in the medicine cabinet just in case. He has one minus – the smell is not very pleasant, but this is a trifle.
Alexey, 30 years old.
I have successful experience using clotrimazole cream. Once a large red spot appeared in the groin on the left, as if rubbed with rough clothing. It did not itch, did not bother, but did not pass. I could not go to the doctor – I worked as a shift. From the pictures I googled that it could be mycosis or pseudomycosis. Well, I'm not a doctor, by sight I can’t tell them apart. But the medicine is the same. I decided that it would definitely help me, whatever it was. He cured the sore in two weeks.
