Information on the active substance
Terbinafine hydrochloride is a synthetic antimycotic that is part of the allylamine group. Initially, it was used exclusively by the oral method, but after, having revealed its effectiveness in the local treatment of the fungus, the substance began to be used as the basis for external antimycotic drugs.
Terbinafine has a wide spectrum of action. It does a good job of:
- yeast and mold fungi;
- some varieties of bacteria and germs.
When ingested, the substance is rapidly absorbed by the walls of the gastrointestinal tract and is distributed throughout the soft tissues. Penetrating into the mucous membranes, epidermis, lymphatic and circulatory fluid, it begins to destroy the structure of fungal cells, eventually leading to the death of the infection.
With local use, the active component enters all layers of the skin or nail plates, accumulates in them in the desired concentration and begins to gradually dissolve the intercellular membrane of mycotic spores and mycelium. Due to this, the vital activity and reproduction of pathogenic microflora is suspended, which ultimately ends in its death and gradual elimination from the body.
The peak concentration of terbinafine hydrochloride in tissues and body fluids is maintained for 12 hours, after which it is processed by the liver and excreted through the urinary system. During this period, the substance protects the body from the resumption of fungal activity and prevents infection by bacteria and germs.
Tablets are used at the middle and advanced stage of development of the fungus, when the infection affects not only the external tissues, but also the internal organs. The main indications for the use of this form of the drug is the following:
- foci of infection caused by dermatophytosis;
- onychomycosis (damage to the keratin layer);
- candidiasis of any kind, including vaginal.
External forms of medication help to cope with:
- mycosis of the nails;
- fungal skin lesions;
- lichen formations;
- dermatomycosis of smooth tissues;
- candidiasis of the epidermis and epithelium;
- trichophytosis and microsporia.
Preparations of any pharmacological form can be used not only for the treatment of fungus. They are also suitable for the prevention of infection by pathogens, which is very important after the end of the course of therapy or if a family member has mycosis. Local drugs with terbinafine for preventive purposes can be used without consulting a doctor, and the administration of tablets should be agreed with a dermatologist, especially if the question is about a child or a pregnant woman.
Instructions for use
The method of using Terbinafine depends on its form of release, the degree of neglect of the disease and the location of the focus of infection. Below are all the options for the use of drugs that are tested in practice and approved by doctors.

It will be possible to accelerate the fight against fungal infection by the use of local antimycotics. It is allowed to use both drugs from the Terbinafine series, and antimycotic drugs with another active substance. However, you need to combine the drugs under the supervision of a dermatologist.
Ointment and cream
Before applying cream or ointment Terbinafine to the affected area of the skin, you need to prepare it. If the fungus affects the nails, the area between the fingers or toes, then limbs should be steamed in the bath:
- In warm water (40-43 degrees Celsius) is added a tablespoon of sodium carbonate, sea salt, 10 drops of essential oil or a strong decoction of any medicinal plant (the specified number of ingredients is designed for 2 liters of liquid);
- Feet or hands fall into the solution and soak for about 15-20 minutes;
- After the procedure, the limbs are rinsed and wiped dry with a disposable towel.
At the end, the nail plates are cut with sterile manicure scissors, cleaned of the decorative coating and sanded with a nail file.
With skin fungus, it is enough to dilute in a glass of hot water 1 tsp. soda or salt and moisten a piece of clean cloth in the liquid. It is applied to the skin for 5 minutes. You can also use alcohol-free infusion of herbs, strong green tea or a solution of essential oils for compresses.
At the end of the preparatory measures, you can proceed to the processing of:
- Feet are smeared with cream or ointment over the entire area, even if the focus of infection is small. Particular attention is paid to the interdigital space and the nail growth zone;
- When processing keratin plates, you need to squeeze a little medicine onto a four-fold cheesecloth (3×3 cm). "Pillow" is applied over the nail and fixed with adhesive plaster. If it is not at hand, then you can simply tie a finger with a bandage or put on a fingertip;
- To treat a fungus of the skin or mucous membrane, it is enough to apply a small amount of the medicine to the site of the infection and rub it thoroughly.
Use ointment or cream Terbinafine should be 2 times a day. With deep mycosis, the number of treatments per day increases up to 3 times. The duration of the use of these forms of antimycotic drugs is determined by the stage of development of the disease:
- initial – 2 weeks;
- average – 3-4 weeks;
- neglected – 1.5-2 months.
In chronic fungus, topical preparations are supplemented with antimycotic tablets. It can be either Terbinafine or another drug with similar properties, but in both cases the doctor should prescribe the medicine.
Aerosolized terbinafine is an advantage in the treatment of nail and foot fungus. This is due to the fact that it is easy to apply to these parts of the body, it does not spread and is quickly absorbed even in a dense layer of keratin. However, it is also used to combat lichen formations, dandruff and mycosis between skin folds.
Before treatment with the spray, preparation is not required, since a liquid medicine and without steaming well soaks the entire structure of the nails or epidermis. The can is shaken, the protective cap is removed and its contents are sprayed onto the infection site from a distance of 10 cm. There is no need to “spit” too much spray at a time. If drops began to appear on the body, then this means that the product was used in excess. But wiping off excess medicine is not required. It absorbs itself in the right amount, and the residue evaporates under the influence of heat.
Contraindications and side effects
Terbinafine hydrochloride is a safe substance that has no contraindications. The only restriction on the use of drugs with its content is an allergy to other components. During pregnancy, during breastfeeding, as well as children under 2 years old, all dosage forms of Terbinafine should be used exclusively under the supervision of a specialist.
The drug also has no side effects. Sometimes when taking tablets, patients experience mild nausea, gastrointestinal upset, weakness, drowsiness. When used locally, urticaria, itching, hyperemia, and swelling of the tissues develop. All these are signs of individual intolerance to terbinafine hydrochloride or auxiliary substances. The allergy goes away after drug withdrawal. In rare cases, taking antihistamines is required.

Reviews on the treatment of the fungus Terbinafine
Anna, 40 years old.
I tried to cure Terbinafine dandruff with a spray, but I did not succeed. For a month and a half, she sprayed her head at night, drank vitamins and ate vegetables, hoping that replenishing the balance of nutrients in the body would help to cope with the problem. All in vain. The only good news is that the drug is cheap and not sorry for the money spent on it. I can’t say that it is bad, apparently, the spray didn’t suit me.
Nikita, 23 years old.
Everyone in my family used terbinafine. Packing with cream always lies in the home medicine cabinet. Personally, I cleaned with his help and deprive, and onychomycosis, which I picked up at swimming competitions. In both cases, the result was quick; I did not notice any side effects. I didn’t even have to drink pills. I smeared with cream 2 times a day and after 10 days the illness receded.
Larisa, 39 years old.
Terbinafine ointment and pills were prescribed to my son by a pediatrician several years ago. Then he had a fungus between his fingers. Last month, the disease reappeared on the feet, but this time chose the nails as a place for its development. I did not go to the doctor and bought Terbinafine again. Since the disease was at the initial stage, everything was done with the use of ointment. We did not take pills. The full course of treatment took about 2 weeks.
