Treatment of onychomycosis and skin fungus is a long process that requires not only regular intake of antimycotic drugs, but also certain rules, the main place in the list of which is the treatment of socks and shoes with disinfectants. It can be special solutions sold in a pharmacy or in a household chemistry store, or self-made liquids.
There are many drugs that have two properties at once – therapeutic and prophylactic. In the first case, they are applied to the localization of the fungus (nails, skin), and in the second, they treat the inner surface of the shoe. Consider the most effective of them and find out which disinfectant solution can be made at home from improvised means.
The drug Mikostop is available in four versions. Pharmacies supply 15 ml nail lotion, paste (20 ml), foot cream and spray in a bottle (150 ml). All forms are made on the basis of bifonazole, whose action is aimed at suppressing the fungus. The spray contains propylene glycol, tetranyl, isobutyl, castor oil and a number of other substances.
If creams and lotions are used only to combat the disease on the nails and skin of the feet, then the aerosol form is also suitable for disinfecting shoes against fungus. Using the product is easy, it does not stain things, has no smell. They kick him in shoes for the night. In the morning it is aired and wiped with a cloth dipped in vinegar. Bicin is supplied in the form of a concentrate powder, from which a solution is made immediately before processing the shoe by diluting it in water (1 sachet per 0.5 liter). The finished liquid is used as follows:
- A rag is wetted in the solution;

- The remains of the product disinfect the outside of the shoes, slippers or shoes;

You can treat shoes from a fungus and get rid of other pathogenic microorganisms on its surface with the help of an available antiseptic – chlorhexidine bigluconate. The drug is available in 0.05% and 20% concentrations. Chlorhexidine is dispensed into polymer and glass vials with a nozzle or cap. Under the influence of the composition, not only the cytoplasmic membranes of bacteria are destroyed, but also the membrane of fungal cells.
Chlorhexidine cannot be used simultaneously with hydrogen peroxide and other antiseptics. The drug is not intended to combat spore fungi, especially if its concentration is 0.05%.
The medicine is applied to a cotton pad and thoroughly wiped shoes and other shoes with it from the inside. Chlorhexidine can rinse boots and shoes, after which they need to be dried. Disinfecting with such a tool is among the cheapest, since a 100 ml bottle of medicine can be purchased for 15-20 rubles.
The drug Miramistin from the same active substance works in a similar way. The medicine is available in 50, 100, 150 and 200 ml plastic bottles. Miramistin is active against microbes that antibiotics cannot cope with. Although the solution does not directly affect fungi, it is a good antiseptic.
Desavid and Formidron
Desavid spray is made from synthetic polyelectrolyte, pesticides in combination with benzalkonium chloride. The tool is considered relatively safe, hypoallergenic and not having a pronounced smell. It is required to disinfect the surface from a distance of 25 cm. Four clicks on the nozzle of the bottle with the solution are enough to disinfect one pair of shoes. It is also acceptable to apply the aerosol on its surface with a cotton swab.
Formidone is made from formaldehyde, a substance of the second hazard class with antiseptic and deodorizing properties. The product is sold in 100 ml glass vials. Shoe processing must be carried out in protective clothing using a cotton swab. It is important to wipe them not only the inner surfaces of the boots, but also the insoles on both sides. The swab with the solution is left inside for 12 hours, after which the shoes can be worn.
Formalin is also made on the basis of formaldehyde. As a stabilizer, 8% methyl alcohol is present in it. Like Formidon, Formalin is assigned a second hazard class. The drug has deodorizing, cauterizing, disinfecting and astringent properties, which is why it is used for toenail fungus as a therapeutic and auxiliary agent. The concentration of the active component in Formalin is lower than in Formidone, so protection is not necessary to use in working with it.
Processing shoes with vinegar and alcohol
To sanitize shoes, you can turn to folk recipes that use vinegar or alcohol. It is believed that the acidic environment is detrimental to the pathogens of mycosis, therefore, it is recommended to remove the remains of fungal spores from shoes with 40% concentration of vinegar essence. The procedure is carried out in rubber gloves, making sure that the liquid does not get on the skin. You need to act similarly to the treatment with Formidone, but vinegar kills the fungus more slowly. The wiped shoes are put in a bag and left for two days. After that, the boots will need time to air. You can also wash socks with the addition of vinegar in water (3 tbsp. L. Acid per 2 liters).
Instead of essence, the fungus can be destroyed with alcohols. In this case, it is not necessary to put the shoes in a bag. Treated shoes, shoes or slippers are exposed to the balcony for several hours, after which they can be worn.
It will be possible to remove the fungus with ammonia, ethyl, ant and medical alcohol. If it is decided to carry out disinfection with a means containing ammonia, then this must be done outdoors.
The effect of ultraviolet light on spores of the fungus
The fungus does not tolerate ultraviolet light, so it is recommended to dry your shoes 2 times a week in the sun. Direct rays destroy pathogens and various representatives of pathogenic microflora. A device that emits ultraviolet light is also sold in stores. It is called "antifungal UV drying for shoes." Under its influence, the spores die, which helps to prevent the recurrence of onychomycosis and skin fungus.
Drying looks like two liners that work from the mains. Shoes can also be sanitized using battery-powered models. In addition to sterilization, the dryer is designed to remove excess moisture from the material, especially textiles and leather.
